HOMECOMING PARADE - A replica of the Old Woman's Shoe tops this float that was in the Carver Heights school homecoming day parade. Although the Trojans lost to the Seminole County invaders, 24 to 6, later on in the evening, nothing marred the elaborate parade viewed by several thousand persons who lined the parade route.

Trojan Squad To Take Part In Big Parade, November 4, 1959

Bands and strutting majorettes will highlight the parade to be held here tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock by the Carver Heights football squad prior to the Homecoming grid contest set for Thursday night on the local gridiron.

Opposing Coach Dabney's warriors will be the highly touted Crooms Academy Panthers of Sanford, one of the larger Class A schools in the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Association.

The Seminole County lads will invade Leesburg to boast a season record of six victories and one defeat.

Nicknamed "Sanford's Big Daddy," the hulking 272-pound tackle and alternating fullback, has been next to hard to stop in previous games of the Panthers. Coach Dabney and his staff are concentrating plays to bring an end to the bruising players ground gaining.

Football fans in the Leesburg area will see plenty of action in tomorrow's game.

Carver Heights Trojans To Meet Sanford Eleven, November 3, 1959

Thursday night of this week will see Carver Heights Trojans in action against the strongest opponent they have met in several years.

The visitors will be the Class "A" Crooms Academy Panthers of Sanford. The Panthers are coming to town favored by at least three touchdowns, and are boasting a record of five wins and one loss. That loss coming at the hands of one of the Class "A" schools out of Jacksonville.

Coach Hubert Dabney and staff feel that their young growing Trojans are in for a night of hard and wide open football as played by the boys from a neighboring county. The Trojans are playing 500 ball, having won three and lost three. One of these losses coming at the hands of Ocala, another Class "A" school, which was in turn defeated by these fighting Panthers.

The Sanford boys will outweigh the local boys in every position and are blessed with good reserve in every respect. The Panthers are led by a huge 272 pound tackle and fullback who has the distinction of being called "Big Daddy". This boy can do just about everything. He tackles hard, runs even harder, and is the kicker for his team. He is strictly powerful and as yet, hasn't been stopped in six games.

A gigantic homecoming parade will be held Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock with five big bands participating and a host of floats and decorated cars. Everyone is invited to take part in all of the homecoming festivities.

Carver heights High School Trojans defeated Eustis Vocational High Tigers Thursday night by the score of 39 to 2.

This was the second conference win of the young season for the Trojans. A drizzling rain could not stem the power of the charging Trojan line and the fleetfooted backs as the game got underway. With less than three minutes having expired, Hawkins, on a hand-off from Lowery, dashed 45 yards for the initial score. Then the Trojans were off. By the end of the first quarter, the game had already turned into a rout.

Eustis got its safety when the visiting Trojans team was penalized to the one-foot line for illegal use of hands, and as Moat attempted to kick out, he stepped out of the end zone. Donald Bisbee, a sophomore flash for the Trojans, kept the fans thrilled with his dazzling burst of speed and his change of pace.

The entire backfield for the Blue and Gold which comprised Lowery, Bisbee, Hawkins, Merritt, and Ward gave an excellent performance of speed, power and drive. The line play of Patterson, Lesane, Haynes, Johnson, and Mosley, was very outstanding. Eustis best backs were McKinney and Benn, while the most troublesome Tiger linesmen were Harris, Gainey, and Lucas.

Carver Heights Trojans Win Opener, 34 to 7, September 30, 1956

Coach Hubert Dabney's Carver Heights High School Trojans opened their 1956 season Friday night with a roaring 34-7 defeat of last year's Conference Champions Hungerford of Winter Park.

Last year this same team defeated the Trojans here in Leesburg by a close score of 19-18. However, this time the Trojans were out for revenge and made a complete one-sided affair of the game.

From the very outset, the Trojans unleashed a devastating ground attack that the enemy could not withstand. After Hungerford's first and only score, they never came within the Trojans 40 yard line.

The longest run of the game was a 54 yard jaunt by Hawkins, fullback of the Trojans, who was hauled down on the one yard line but went over on the next play for the score. The entire squad played hard and alert ball and to distinguish any one player, would be hard to do. This was a conference game, and for next week, the boys have their eyes set on Eustis, another conference team.

This game will be played in Eustis.

The first home game is October 11, with the Class "A" Howard High of Ocala. Here are the lineup and scoring quarters of the Trojans - Bobcats game:

Trojans Open At Venetian Gardens, 1953

The Leesburg Trojans, of the Lake County Training school, will pry off the opening lid to their '53 Gridiron season when they meet the Fessenden Tigers, from Ocala, in Venetian Gardens Park at 8 p.m. Thursday night.

Coach H. O. Dabney, who is beginning his fifth season as head coach at L.C.T.S. said that the Trojans are in good shape and are ready for the visiting Tigers, from Marion County. The Tigers are reported to have a strong, fast team this season, and from all counts, this contest should be a thriller.

Coach Dabney and his assistant L.J. Berry, have a new bunch of Trojans playing this season. When they open up tomorrow night they will have only seven lettermen returning from last season and will start five new boys who have never played varsity ball. At Tuesday night's practice, Coach Dabney said, "This is a swell bunch of boys, and with 35 boys that I have had in my coaching career and with a couple of games under their belt, they will be hard to beat."

The following are out for the '53 Trojans squad: Clifford Smalley, Charles Sypies, C. Williams, Hugh Brown, Jerry Chatman, Edgar Bowens, Willie Poole, Al Fred Joyce, Joe Knight, Hamick Gillard, Alno Pinkey, Walter Wiggens, Steve Patterson, Andrew Knier, Gary Kent, Robert Kent, Willie Williams, Frank Brown, Don Henry Bisbee, Izaac Humpries, Ishis Tyndell, George Stephens, Shade Eashman, Titty Randolph, Lewis Moate, Bobbie Merritt, Robert Ward, Claude Brockington, Melvin Hawkins, Charles Brooks, Homer Ferguson, Claude Harge and James Connelly.

When the Trojans take the field they will carry one of the best winning records in Central Florida. In the past four seasons the Trojans have a record of 28 wins, five defeats, and two ties.

The '53 schedule calls for nine contests. Following Thursday's game, the card includes: Oct. 1, Alachua here; Oct. 9, DeLand, there; Oct. 16, Plant City, there; Oct. 22, Hungerford of Orlando, here; Oct. 29, Eustis, here; Nov. 5, Dade City, there; Nov. 13, Sanford, here (homecoming); Nov. 19, New Smyrna Beach, there.

The Trojans 35-member band will be on hand for the half-time show, and also on hand in the cheering section will be the Leesburg Trojans Quarterback Club.
