For the first time, the Lake County Training School will be
allowed to extend their annual homecoming day parade route down Main Street,
City Commissioners decided Monday night, setting a precedent in Leesburg.
School principal P. E. Williams said that they would like
more people to see the parade by allowing it to come at least two blocks past
Canal Street, their limit in past years.
Commissioner Tim Knowles inquired how the school became
limited, and was told by City Manager Keener Mizell that “It has been suggested
they not come up Main Street.”
“They’ll have to cut it short if they want to stay on Main
Street, because it ties up traffic,” Police Chief Bill Fisher said.
Knowles asked if the only objection to the parade was the
traffic difficulty and Fisher replied, “Yes.”
