LEESBURG - Bates Avenue of Eustis received the opening kickoff last night in the season opener for Carver Heights and before relinquishing the ball had chalked up a 6-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The final six yards were made by Bates leading ground gainer, Monroe who burst through a gaping hole and then scored standing up. This was about the only bright spot for the Tigers during the night for thereafter, Coach Hubert Dabney's Trojans took over and pushed the visitors all over the field.

The locals were devastating in their attack and anxious to prove their ability. Penalties hurt them throughout the evening, having two touchdowns called back resulting from penalties.

In the second quarter, Artis Brown, plus vicious line play evened the score at 6 all with Brown churning out the final four yards. Half-time scored 6-6.

In the third quarter, the Trojans were plagued with fumbles, each time within the 10-yard line of the Tigers. A bad snap by the visitors center gave the home boys a safety.

The third quarter ended with the score 8-6 Trojans.

The final quarter was a case of hard-nosed football by the blue and gold boys who scored two more TDs by Artis Brown and two more called back. Outstanding linesmen for the Trojans were Joe Fields, Bob Morgan, Albert Kincade and Charlie Tarver. Sharing honors with Brown in the backfield were John Dabney, Tom Parker, Dailey, Ervin Crummer. For the visitors Hicks, Monroe, Benn and Forbes gave a good account of themselves.

This weekend, the Trojans hit the road for a game with Wymore Tech, always a tough team. Next home game is October 6 against Southwestern of DeLand.

The following is a thumbnail on each of the outstanding prospects at Carver Heights this year prepared by Hubert O. Dabney,  Carver Heights head football coach.

Artis Brown - Senior, 175 pounds, back. Led the team in scoring last year and all indications point toward an even greater season. Very good. As Artis goes, so goes the offensive, punch. Good speed.

Joseph Walker - Senior and captain, 160 pounds, linebacker and center. One of the most aggressive players on the squad. Don't by misled by his size. He's a tough as they come.

John Dabney - Senior, 170 pounds, quarterback. If John improves his running ability to match that of his passing, could develop into a tremendous play-caller. Very intelligent and brainy. Spent the summer studying in England and France.

Leroy Houser - Senior, 155 pounds, flanker. Has the best pair of hands on the squad. Good speed and good moves. The future looks real bright for him.

James Hooks - Senior, 183 pounds, end and punter, Played first season last year and developed into one of the best. Left footed punter averaging about 40 yards a game.

Leonard Chatman - Senior, 175 pounds linesman. Very quiet in nature and a gentlemen but deadly on the playing field. Plays both ways and can adjust to most any position.

Alphonso Jones - Senior, 173 pounds, center. One of the most rugged men on the team. Likes to play rough and deadly tackle and blocker. Good speed and good student.

Albert Kincade - Senior, 210 linesman. Always at his best when the goings get rough. Very strong and powerful, reads defenses well and reacts. Quick as a cat.

Nathaniel Williamson - Senior, 230 pounds, linesman. Plays both ways and is strong as a bull, yet one of the most likeable players on the squad. Likes contact.

Gene Ellis - Senior 167 pounds, back. Good speed and hard runner. If he can overcome the injury-jinx, will play an important part for the Trojans. Second leading scorer last season.

Dennis Jackson - Senior, 161 pounds, guard and monster-man Dennis likes to play and can always be counted on to be where the action is. Hard worker and stays in good condition. As tough as any little man you can find.

Curtis Lueallen - Senior 172 pounds linebacker. Another very quiet boy on the squad but makes his presence known on the playing field.

Thomas Parker - Junior, 170 pounds, quarterback. Selects plays wisely and throws all real well. First year in this position and is certain to improve.

Bob Morgan - Junior, 240 pounds, tackle. A football coach's dream. Big, fast and plenty of know how. Good natured at all times, likes to kid the smaller boys about not growing up. Destined to be one of the greatest players in Trojans History.

Joseph Fields - Junior, 180 pounds tackle. Another coach's player. A very bright student and applies his ability, both athletically and academically, on the field. He too is certain to develop into a great.

Charlie Tarver - Sophomore, 215 pounds of all man. Has been playing ever since eight grade and what  a player. 6' 4" in height, with fairly good speed and knows what to do, when to do it and how to do it. Makes a coach proud he is on your side.

A number of Trojans who are certain to see plenty of action are James Lowery, ErvinCrummer , Anthony Hart, Leon Wilcher, Henry Kerrison, backs, Issac Williams, Paul Pursley, Michael Chatman, Ronald Price, James Mackey, Gregory Johnson. Elroy Hamilton, Ronald Allen, Robert Hurst, linesman Valentine Adams, Richard Cannon, Darby McCants, and Gregory Jordan will round out the squad.

All in all, the Carver Heights Trojans outlook is fair, if the new quarterbacks come around, they'll be tough a plenty. On the other hand, if not, the blue and gold lads are in for a long-dreary-autumn.
