Trojans Declared Conference Champ, December 12, 1956

Coach Hubert Dabney's Carver Heights High School Trojans were officially declared Central Florida Athletic Conference Football Champions for 1956 at a recent meeting of member schools held at Hungerford High School Gymnasium, Winter Park.

The Trojans of Leesburg marched through an undefeated season in conference play and showed their greatness by finishing with an overall record of 8 wins and 1 loss. Two teams were tied with identical records for the runnersup spot; Eustis with 2-1-1 and Hungerford finished in a deadlock for second place honors.

Both of these teams met during the season and the game ended in a 13-13 tie. An All-Conference team of twenty-two players was also selected at this meeting with each player receiving a gold football. The Champion Trojans dominated the team by placing 10 boys on the team.

Players from the Trojan squad making the team were; Edward Haynes, end; Steve Patterson, tackle; Emory Hamilton, guard; Lewis Moat, center; George Stephens, end; Cornell Lowery, quarterback; Donald Bisbee, halfback; Melvin Hawkins, fullback; Walter Wiggens, linebacker; and James Johnson, middle guard, of the ten boys making the team, seven are seniors.

Dabney states in order to hold his own in the conference next year, a lot of work must be done, schools comprising the C.F.A.C. and their standings are as follows:

Dade City         1-3
Brooksville        1-3
Cocoa              1-3
New Symyrna   1-2
Inverness          0-4
